DANCE GROUPS / INDIVIDUALS

ALL DANCE TUITION IS CURRENTLY BEING TUTORED IN GROUPS.

There are many advantages and disadvantages learning either individually or in a group situation.  Below I have listed some of the main points in each respective section.

Group Dance Tuition: Advantages - Disadvantages

Individual Dance Tuition: Advantages - Disadvantages

GROUP DANCE TUITION - ADVANTAGES

  • More suited to pupils who are learning dance for the first time
  • Learning to work with others
  • An amount of progressive learning amalgamated with other aspects of dance performance (including application for styles and rhythms)
  • Interaction with other pupils
  • Whilst there is an amount of progressive learning - other aspects of dance are also introduced because of the group situation
  • Group tuition allows feedback/answers from pupils
  • Mixing with other pupils within the same level
  • Indirectly provides individuals with an insight into the comprehension and skills of other pupils as compared to their own abilities - this in turn indirectly gives an individual a reason to become "as good" as another pupil through regular practise
  • Trains the individual to listen to others rhythms while dancing in a group
  • Trains the individual to follow arrangements of music
  • Individuals also indirectly learn from others
  • Allows individuals to share, watch and listen to others
  • An amount of individual attention
  • Suitable with regard to learning exam work or similar structured work designed to progress over a period of time to a more advanced level
  • Suitable with regard to practising team/troupe items and performances
  • Less expensive

GROUP DANCE TUITION - DISADVANTAGES

  • May result in some individuals progressing more quickly than others (and thus challenges the tutor to modify lessons that cater for variations in lessons based on each individual's ability).  This means that exceptional pupils are not "held back"
  • Although conversely, individuals may not be as quick to learn some skills as others, again, it requires the tutor to support all students as individuals within the group situation
  • Rate of progress may be slightly slower than individual lessons, but in my opinion, the advantages gaining experience within a group situation outweighs this particular disadvantage
  • As pupil numbers increase (thus increasing the number of groups), there may be the possibility of transferring pupils into a more suitably skilled group which could be problematic initially as the individual gets to mix with a new group of people
  • Less individualised
  • Less appropriate for individuals who are working towards entering dance competitions (solo work)

INDIVIDUAL DANCE TUITION - ADVANTAGES

  • One on one lessons allowing the individual to progress at their own pace, particularly advanced students doing solo work
  • Application is tailor made (with regard to tempos and rhythms of music) in accordance with the individual's needs and capabilities
  • Allows for one to be extended by learning more difficult steps or rhythmical beating
  • Suited more for advanced pupils
  • Suited more for pupils who intend competing in dance competitions for solos

INDIVIDUAL DANCE TUITION - DISADVANTAGES

  • Does not give the individual the same experience of learning in a group environment
  • Does not give the individual the same experience dancing with others
  • Does not allow the individual to see others dance which may possibly fuel and desire to try very hard in class
  • Does not allow the individual to gauge their ability against others (with regard to the recognition of possibly needing to practise harder!)
  • More expensive
