GROUP/INDIVIDUAL TUITION

There are many advantages and disadvantages learning either individually or in a group situation.  Below I have listed some of the main points in each respective section.

Group Music Tuition: Advantages - Disadvantages

Individual Music Tuition: Advantages - Disadvantages

GROUP MUSIC TUITION - ADVANTAGES

  • More suited to pupils who are learning music for the first time
  • Learning to read music notes
  • An amount of progressive learning amalgamated with other aspects of music performance (including application for styles and rhythms)
  • Musical interaction with other pupils
  • Whilst there is an amount of progressive learning - other aspects of music are also introduced because of the group situation
  • Group tuition allows feedback/answers from pupils
  • Mixing with other pupils within the same level
  • Indirectly provides individuals with an insight into the comprehension and skills of other pupils as compared to their own abilities - this in turn indirectly gives an individual a reason to become "as good" as another pupil through regular practise
  • Trains the individual to listen while playing, particularly when amalgamating a variety of music skills to the one performance
  • Trains the individual to follow arrangements of music
  • Individuals also indirectly learn from others
  • Allows individuals to share and listen to others
  • An amount of individual attention
  • Less expensive

GROUP MUSIC TUITION - DISADVANTAGES

  • May result in some individuals progressing more quickly than others (and thus challenges the tutor to modify lessons that cater for varying musical performances based on each individual's ability).  This means that exceptional pupils are not "held back"
  • Although conversely, individuals may not be as quick to learn some skills as others, again, it requires the tutor to support all students as individuals within the group situation
  • Rate of progress may be slightly slower than individual lessons, but in my opinion, the advantages gaining experience playing with others outweighs this particular disadvantage
  • As pupil numbers increase (thus increasing the number of groups), there may be the possibility of transferring pupils into a more suitably skilled group which could be problematic initially as the individual gets to mix with a new group of people
  • Less individualised
  • Less appropriate for individuals who are working towards entering music competitions or music exams
  • Less appropriate for individuals who are intermediate or advanced performers

INDIVIDUAL MUSIC TUITION - ADVANTAGES

  • One on one lessons allowing the individual to progress at their own pace
  • Learning to read music notes
  • Theoretical application is tailor made according to the individual's needs and capabilities pending instrument taught
  • Lessons are progressive with additional styles/methods being introduced simultaneously
  • Suited more for advanced pupils
  • Suited more for pupils who intend sitting music exams or competing in music competitions
  • Suited more for adult pupils

INDIVIDUAL MUSIC TUITION - DISADVANTAGES

  • Does not give the individual the same experience of learning in a group environment
  • Does not give the individual the same experience playing music with others
  • Does not allow the individual to hear others play to the same degree
  • Does not allow the individual to gauge their ability against others (with regard to the recognition of possibly needing to practise harder!)
  • More expensive
