MUSIC STYLES and RHYTHMS CLASSICAL STYLE and MODERN STYLE Learning to read music is essential if one is to master the art of playing an instrument. It has always been said, if you learn to play classical first, you can adapt to play other styles of music more easily than the converse. For this reason I still encourage a certain amount of theory and classical application to be undertaken, but in saying this, I also like to teach "outside the square" by introducing other styles of playing and/or adapting with other musicians - usually referred to as "Modern Style". There are "shortcut" methods which allow one to learn skills and apply these "Modern Styles" quite successfully. This involves integrating individuals in a group or "band" situation, where each person's input amalgamates into one performance. These modern styles may be applied through rhythmical application:
The styles are centered around various chord applications. The styles are also applied to various instruments (eg: piano/keyboard, rhythm guitar, bass, drums and instruments for melody) Incorporating the "modern style" chord approach allows an individual to become familiar with other instruments and how each instrument forms part of a group or band.
